Manila opens WS softball bid vs P Rico

Team Manila begins its uphill climb back to the top as it opens its campaign against Latin American squad San Juan, Puerto Rico Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila) in the 2014 Big League Softball World Series at Layton Field in Sussex County, Delaware.

Out to reclaim the crown it won in 2012, Manila is fielding one of its strongest squads, made up of the best players from the UAAP, which ruled the Asia Pacific Championship last month in Clark field, Pampanga.

The Manila softbelles landed in what is considered the toughest group of the tournament in Pool A, where they will also be pitted against Florida and two strong teams from host Delaware, one of which is the defending champion.

Manila Little League Philippines president Rafael “Che” Borromeo expressed confidence of a strong showing from the Manila squad.

“I believe the girls can pull this one off, but we expect stiff competition,” said Borromeo.

Manila coach Ana Santiago will have four standout pitchers—Mary Ann Antolihao and Mary Luisse Garde of University of Santo Tomas, and Adamson’s Baby Jane Raro and Riflayca Basa.

Manila will also be represented by Roxzell Pearl Niloban, shortstop Queeny Sabobo,  Angelie Ursabia and outfielder Lorna Adorable  of Adamson, as well as third base Arianne Vallestero of National University. Cedelf P. Tupas
