‘Little Azkals’ take first step toward World Cup dream
Young football players from all over the country embark in a long-term sports program as the Philippines launch its bold bid to qualify for the 2019 Under-17 World Cup.
A total of 22 booters, six from Metro Manila, were picked for the under-11 national pool that has been tagged as the “Little Azkals.”
“To play at the national level, then if your dreams come true, you play in the world stage with superstars—that is the dream of all football players,” British ambassador Asif Ahmad said in a lunch he hosted Thursday in his Makati residence.
Article continues after this advertisementThe British Council has teamed up with the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) to help sustain the sport’s grassroots program.
Last year, the young nationals visited Loughborough University in Leicestershire, United Kingdom, for training backed by the British Council.
The documentary “Pangarap Kong World Cup,” featuring the 22 kids’ tryout and training, will be aired on ABS-CBN this Sunday.
Article continues after this advertisement“There’s a misconception that football is for the elite, but football is for everyone, even for the less privileged,” said PFF president Mariano Araneta.
Heading the national pool are Robert Orr, Michael Osorio, Jacob Pedernal, Nikko Gutierrez, Shaninho Clemente and Vin Joel dela Cruz from Metro Manila. Cebu’s Josh Asignar, Yuan Rena, Tristan Enad and Charles Unabia lead the provincial talents.
