NCAA: Generals shoot down struggling Stags

MANILA, Philippines — Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) head coach Gerry Esplana knows how important his veteran guard John Tayongtong is to the team.

And Tayongtong proved his worth Monday to lead the Generals to a 71-56 win over the struggling San Sebastian Stags in NCAA Season 90 men’s basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Tayongtong scored team-high 17 points, eight coming in the fourth quarter, where EAC outscored San Sebastian, 22-14.

“It’s good because we’re able to end the first round on a winning note,” said Esplana after his team improved to 3-6.

Jan Jamon added 16 points while Noube Happi and Jack Arquero had 13 and 12 points, respectively, for the Generals, who netted 17 points out of the Stags’ whopping 28 turnovers.

CJ Perez was the lone Stag able to reach double figures in scoring with 18 points. He also had 10 rebounds, two steals and a block.

The Stags though, shot themselves in the foot with just 33% shooting from the two-point area as they reeled to their fifth straight setback for a 3-6 slate.
