Santo Tomas, UC dominate table tennis tilt
University of Santo Tomas and University of Cebu ruled the 8th Eastern Cup National Inter-Scholastic Table Tennis Championships held recently at Philippine Buddhacare Academy.
Daniel Jay Tormis, Val Stephen Jaca, Lemeul Agbon and Francis Bendebel led UC to the college men’s team open title by pulling off an upset over favored Walden Ledesma, Jethro Yatco and Jerald Cristobal of De La Salle University 1.
Ken Yu, Edmund Garganian, Leonard Solis and Jeremy Ruiz of DLSU 2 placed third in the tournament sanctioned by the Table Tennis Association of the Philippines headed by Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV and table tennis association chair Jay Omila.
Article continues after this advertisement“This tournament is a good buildup for the national championship [in October],” said Trillanes. “It also serves to sustain Tatap’s grassroots development programs not only in Metro Manila but in the provinces as well.’’
Girly Apas, Karmel Rocero and Katrina Tempiatura made UST proud after dominating the college women’s team open during the four-day tournament participated in by over 300 netters.
Far Eastern U’s Shamiela Pineda, Rose Jean Fadol, Jasmine Jaro and Fatima Soya placed second while La Salle and University of the Philippines finished joint third.
