Sharapova, Murray set for Manila leg of IPTL
Surely this one sounds more than just a hit-and-giggle event.
World tennis stars Maria Sharapova and Andy Murray have asked Filipino fans to rally behind the Manila Mavericks in the International Premier Tennis League that kicks off here this November.
In messages posted over YouTube, Sharapova and Murray, the marquee players for the Manila Mavericks, said they are looking forward not just to play in the country but also to win the inaugural IPTL crown which comes with a $1-million top prize.
Article continues after this advertisementSharapova, one of the sport’s biggest stars, is a five-time winner in the majors. She has previously hired the Philippines’ former top player Cecil Mamiit as one of her hitting partners.
“Hey guys, it’s Maria here, I just wanted to say how excited I am to finally be coming all the way to the Philippines for the first time in my career,” said Sharapova.
“I’m gonna be playing for the Manila Mavericks so I hope that all of you get a chance to watch me play, and support me and of course root for the win,” she added.
Article continues after this advertisementMurray, a two-time majors champ and reigning Olympic champion, said he’s looking at a strong Manila team in the event set Nov. 28 to 30 at MOA Arena.
“Hi I’m Andy Murray. I’m playing for Manila Mavericks. I’m sure we’re gonna be a great team and hope we can win.”
They will compete against the current and past superstars of the game in a unique event that will hop into four countries that own franchises including the Singapore Slingers, the Indian Aces and the Dubai Royals.
The other Philippine bets are Jo Wilfried-Tsonga, Kirsten Flipkens, Daniel Nestor, Carlos Moya and top PH player Treat Huey.
Organizers said those confirmed to play in Manila leg are Serena Williams of the Slingers, Ana Ivanovic of the Aces and Canadian rising star Eugenie Bouchard of the Royals.
