Rains wash out N’woods play

HEAVY rains washed out the third round of the ICTSI Royal Northwoods Championship in San Rafael, Bulacan, yesterday after the layout was rendered unplayable.

The tournament has been reduced to 54 holes with the final round to be played today, weather permitting, according to the organizing Pilipinas Golf Tournaments Inc.

Zannie Boy Gialon, the 25-year-old former caddy from Apo Golf in Davao, will take a three-shot lead over Mark Fernando in today’s play as he seeks to end a two-year title drought.

Incidentally, Gialon’s first win came in 2012 in Bacolod, where the event was also reduced by 18 holes. He beat Antonio Lascuña in a playoff after both ended the second round tied in regulation.

That tournament was scheduled for 54 holes, but the organizing Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc. decided to have the duo play extra holes to break the tie when the final round the following day couldn’t be staged.

Elmer Saban and Charles Hong lay at 138 with Rufino Bayron lurking another shot behind.

Rounding out the top 10 are Ferdie Aunzo, Arnold Villacencio, Micah Shin and Omar Dungca, who have 140 aggregates and Rolando Marabe and Chris Delos Santos  who are seven shots behind. Musong R. Castillo
