JRU upsets San Beda, gains share of fourth spot

MANILA, Philippines – Jose Rizal University upset defending champion San Beda, 74-65, to regain a share of the fourth spot in the NCAA Season 90 men’s basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Jaycee Ascunsion scored a game-high 19 points for the Heavy Bombers, who tied the Perpetual Help Altas with similar 10-6 slates.

“We didn’t back down from the physical play,” said JRU head coach Vergel Meneses in Filipino.

Tey Teodoro and Philip Paniamogan added 15 and 11, points respectively for the Heavy Bombers.

The Red Lions, eyeing their eighth championship in nine seasons, dropped to 13-4.

Nigerian center Ola Adeogun shot 18 points for San Beda, which suffered its first back-to-back losses since 2012.
