Lyceum-Cavite widened its lead in the Seniors division while De La Salle Zobel staged a mighty comeback to seize the upperhand in Midgets 1 at the resumption of the weather-disrupted ICTSI-JGFP Inter-School golf championships in various courses recently.
At the Eastridge Golf Club in Binangonan, Rizal, national team mainstay Rupert Zaragosa joined hands with Gilbert Gamolo and Janzen Morilla for 136 and a 36-hole total of 300 to hold off De La Salle-Taft, which drew 132 from Eric Gallardo, AR Ramos and Miggy Yee for 272.
Zaragosa, who set a jungolf record of 10-under 62 in medal play for 64 points in the first round, matched the 38 of Gamolo on his last warmup game before leaving for the Incheon Asian Games. Morilla added 47.
DLSZ’s Ira Alido, Philippe Palanca and Jolo Magcalayo outgunned erstwhile leader Ateneo by 27 points and emerged the new frontrunner in Midgets 1 action at Eagle Ridge Golf and Country Club in Gen. Trias, Cavite.
The tournament is sponsored by ICTSI Foundation and backed by the Philippine Golf Foundation, Golf Depot, Martin Lorenzo and Inquirer Golf.
Alido fired 54 points to lead scoring anew for DLSZ, Palanca shot 51 and Magcalayo 44 as the Greenies pooled 451 for 54 holes.
Ateneo slumped to its worst showing in three rounds as Aidric Chan (43) and Carl Jano Corpus (42) and Riggs Illescas (37) could only manage 122 for a 442 total. Ateneo 2 was a far third at 331, followed by LSGH at 325, Xavier 1 at 254, Ateneo 3 at 180, La Salle Greenhills 2 at 150 and Ateneo 4 at 37.
College of St. Benilde was running third in seniors action with a 254, Ateneo 1 followed at 246, Ateneo 2 at 224 and Ateneo 3 at 33.
