FEU weathers RTU storm, charges back in five-setter

MANILA, Philippines—Charging back to weather the storm, the Far Eastern University Tamaraws went on a rampage against the Rizal Technological University Blue Thunders in the latter stages of the match to claim the five-setter at 3-2 (17-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-20, 16-14) at their encounter at the Shakey’s V-League Season 11-Men’s Division at the San Juan Arena Thursday evening.

Down two sets to none, the Tamaraws dominated the final three sets to salvage their first victory for a 1-1 slate.

FEU pounded RTU in the third set which saw the teams at a 23-23 stalemate before the Tams utilized their defense to claim the set.

Staring at a 14-14 lock in the fifth set, Joshua Barrica went into an offensive to carry his team with quick strike that bounced off the Blue Thunder defense.

Tamaraws head coach Kid Santos said he wants his team to go for another five-setter.

“I want this kind of game,” Santos said, whose team lost a five-setter against a veteran-loaded Systema team on Tuesday. “It’s meant to build their fortitude and composure for the games.”

Santos admits that his young team, which was only formed on the first week of June, has to bulk up emotionally especially for the oncoming UAAP season.

RTU held a 10-7 lead in the fifth set until Ronchette Villegas sparked a 5-1 dash for FEU to put the boards 12-11.

FEU had four players score in double figures with Greg Dolor leading the charge with 18.

Barrica added 15, while Jeric Gacutan and Franco Camcam had 13 and 11 respectively.

Sahud Masuhod paced RTU with 18 points while Carlo Sebastian had 16 and Ryan Crisostomo contributing 10 for the 0-1 Blue Thunders.
