Donaire on TKO loss: ‘I’m honored I lost to Walters’

MANILA, Philippines — Filipino boxer Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. showed that he was graceful in defeat saying that he was honored to have lost to undefeated Jamaican boxer Nicholas Walters for the World Boxing Association featherweight title.

In his official Facebook page, Donaire said Sunday that he had no regrets on the outcome of the fight, adding that Walters deserved the win.

“Congratulations to Walters! He deserves everything. I have no regrets. I can honestly say I trained my best and I made alot of sacrifices this camp. I’m honored I lost to him in the fight we had. I hit him with everything I had and he just kept coming. Thanks to all my friends family and fan who believed in me and still believe in me. I love u all. God bless,” Donaire said.

Donaire’s humble admission was liked by 15,917 people and shared 842 times as of posting time.

Donaire failed to defend his featherweight title to Walters after he was knocked out in the sixth round Saturday night in Carson, California.

The boxer’s supporters on Facebook were quick to rally behind the defeated boxing champion.

Robert Velhagen commented that Donaire is “a true gentleman and a hero to all Filipinos!”

One fan reminded Donaire that despite the loss, he is a five-time boxing champion.

“Youre a 5 division world champion nonito. U made us proud pinoy many times. At your lowest point were always proud of you. A real champion is strong and humble too to accept defeat, mabuhay ka nonito,” said Bernie Badong’s comment on Donaire’s post.

Also, Vinzon Carlo Jian said “Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but rising up everytime we fall. Im Proud of you nonito!”

However, some fans also urged Donaire to retire.
