Bonnie Tan resigns as Lyceum head coach

MANILA, Philippines — Bonnie Tan, a fixture at the Lyceum sidelines, has resigned as head coach of the Pirates.

Tan kept mum on what prompted his resignation from the school he had served for 11 years, citing “personal reasons” but made it clear that there was no fallout.

“After serving the last probationary season for NCAA this season, I’m confident with the performance we have reached as being the youngest team,” said Tan.

Lyceum posted a 25-47 slate through four seasons in the NCAA since joining the league as a guest team in 2011.

The Pirates’ losing record under Tan’s watch though, won’t define the team.

Lyceum, with the exception of Season 88 where it finished dead last, wound up in the middle of the pack with a couple of 7-11 marks and an 8-10 slate last year.

The 42-year-old Tan will continue to coach Lyceum, which has a tie-up with Bread Story, in the PBA D-League.

Glenn Capacio, who is being endorsed by Tan, looms as the Pirates’ next mentor but Capacio is currently the lead assistant at Kia and is at the moment in charge of the Sorento’s coaching duties with playing-coach Manny Pacquiao in deep training for his upcoming bout next month.

Tan also guided the Pirates to two straight championships in the Inter-Scholastic Athletic Association (ISAA) and four straight Sweet 16 appearances in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL).

He also serves as an assistant coach for the GlobalPort Batang Pier in the PBA.

“With the long term programs we have established in the team, I’m sure LPU will go farther and will reach its goal to reach the Final Four,” Tan, who also expects the school to become a regular NCAA member soon, said in a statement.
