CEBU CITY—Cebu Country Club tries to put an end to Manila Southwoods-Masters’ dominance of the Philippine Airlines Ladies Interclub’s Championship division by finishing just as strongly as it started at the up-and-down Alta Vista here.
Holding a seven-point lead going into today’s final 18 holes, Cebu CC can apply more pressure on the Carmona, Cavite-based squad with a fiery start anchored again on reedy teenager Lois Kaye Go.
SW-Masters will come into the final round trailing for the first time in the last four years, but skipper Beachie Abiera is confident that the team can turn things around with better course knowledge.
“We all struggled because we were very unfamiliar with the course,” Abiera said on Thursday. “Hopefully, we all get to read the greens better (on Saturday).”
Sofia Chabon, a member of the ICTSI stable, carried the fight for SW-Masters with 51 points Thursday but top gun Annika Cedo struggled to just 48.
Go, a 14-year-old eighth grader, was the surprise package of the tournament, shooting 53 points to lead the individual race. She had four birdies in just her second round at the layout this year.
Meanwhile, Valley Golf, drawing 48 points from Kyla Nocum, pooled 243 yesterday to take a nine-point lead over Alabang in the Founder’s Division that has shaped up to be a two-sided fight.
Nocum, a former junior golfer, shone for the Antipolo-based team despite hitting three tee shots out-of-bounds. She was backed by Isabel Miravite with 43 and Jocelyn Sevilla with 41.
Violeta Pegels, Cielo Fregil and Dina De Jesus contributed 39, 38 and 34 points, respectively, to complete the count for Valley, which threw away the 24 of Evangeline Apuhin and the 21 of Maria Consuelo Conti.
Rita Horan fired 46 points to lead Alabang, which also drew a 43 from Marilyn Reyes, a 41 from Jang Eung-sil and a 39 from Jocelyn Garcia. Christine Popp’s 33 and Joan Morales’ 32 rounded out scoring for Alabang.
Sta. Elena Golf was 34 points behind in third spot after a 200, with Mactan Island in fourth another seven points back.
