KUALA LUMPUR—Angelo Que shot a 3-under-par 69 Saturday and moved into contention for another rich payday by joining a five-man logjam for ninth place after three rounds of the $7 million CIMB Classic jointly sanctioned by the Asian Tour and US PGA Tour.
The Filipino star, a three-time winner on the Asian Tour, fired four straight birdies from No. 2 and went on to finish with a 54-hole total of 208, just four strokes behind joint leaders Ryan Moore, the defending champion from the US; and countryman Kevin Na.
Que, who lost in a playoff to Australian Scott Hend in the $1.3 million Hong Kong Open two weeks ago, was the top Asian Tour campaigner after three rounds with his earlier scores of 67-72. He was tied with Brendon de Jonge of Zimbabwe (65, Americans Patrick Reed (68) and Jeff Overton (71) and Australian Cameron Smith (69).
“My goal is still the same, just shoot under par. I’ll keep it simple. I’m not going to try hard to shoot low. I’m just going to keep playing the way I’m playing because I’m making a lot of birdies, so I’ll just keep doing that and hopefully, with a little bit of luck, I’ll go really low,” said Que.
Antonio Lascuña finally felt the effect of a hectic playing schedule, managing no better than a 74 after earlier rounds of 72-72 and fell way back at 218.
Meanwhile, Juvic Pagunsan added a 72 to earlier scores of 69-71 and stood in a tie for 44th at 212 in the Mynavi ABC Championship in Hyogo, Japan.
Moore rolled in seven birdies at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club for a three-day total of 12-under-par 204 and was joined atop the leaderboard by former Asian Tour Rookie of the Year Na, who surged into contention with a bogey free 67.
World No. 4 Sergio Garcia of Spain produced some wonderful par saves on his inward nine as he fired a 68 to share third spot with overnight leader Billy Hurley III, who carded a 71. They will enter the final round just one stroke back. Asian Tour News
