PETRON will shoot for a women’s sweep of the first round when it goes up against winless Foton today in the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix volleyball presented by Asics at Cuneta Astrodome.
Generika and Mane ’N Tail collide in a bid to improve their standings going into the second round of the women’s division, while Cignal guns for win No. 3 against Cavite in the lone men’s game.
The Blaze Spikers, unbeaten so far in four games, hope to get the morale-boosting sweep in the 6 p.m. game against the Tornadoes, who have yet to score a win since joining the league.
But Petron coach George Pascua said they can’t take a team like Foton, which has struggled to consistently hit its groove in this tournament, lightly.
Hungry team
“They are a hungry team that’s why we have to be more cautious. We still have to bring out our A-game,” said Pascua.
In its last game, Foton started strongly against Cignal before dropping the first set at 27-25. But Foton collapsed after import Irina Tarasova hurt her neck in the second frame.
American Alaina Bergsma and Brazilian Erica Adachi are expected to spearhead Petron which also boasts a major scoring and defensive threat in top rookie Dindin Santiago.
Santiago and Carmina Aganon underscored the seriousness of this match by skipping another tournament to bolster Petron’s vaunted attack.
Mane ’N Tail will be bannered by league scoring record holder Kristy Jaeckel but the rest of the Lady Stallions must step up to help her and work around the dynamic game-style of setter Kaylee Manns.
