Gonzales, Cano bag PCA junior crowns

Flashing their immense potential, second seed Cenon Gonzales Jr. and No. 6 pick Joshua Cano ruled their respective age-groups Monday in the 33rd Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open at PCA indoor shell clay courts in Manila.

Gonzales bucked a lethargic second-set performance on his way to a  6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory over fifth seed Vincent Alanis for the the boys’ 16-under crown.

Aggressive right from the start,  Cano whipped No. 7 seed Argil Lance Canizares, 6-4, 6-3, to clinch the boys’ 18-under crown.

But Canizares came back strong in the doubles event, teaming up with Kyle Parpan to overcome the pair of Joseph Parpan and Chris Prulla, 8-6.

Also copping doubles’ titles were Fahd Banico and Jose Maria Pague, who ruled the boys’ 14-under division following a thrilling 8-6 win over Marcus Del Rosario and Manuel Balce III.

Action in the premier men and women’s divisions gets going Nov. 16.
