Tagaytay hosting Asian Juniors, Girls chess tilt

TAGAYTAY City has agreed to take over the hosting of the Asian Juniors and Girls Championships from Nov. 29 to Dec. 4 at Tagaytay International Convention Center.

The tournament was originally scheduled Nov. 21 to 29 in Shandong, China, but the Chinese organizers withdrew at the last minute, prompting the Asian Chess Federation to seek an alternate venue.

Fide (World Chess Federation) secretary general Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, who attended the recent Fide presidential board meeting in Sochi, Russia, agreed to stage the Asian Juniors to ensure that the developmental competition is held within the year.

According to Tolentino, also the representative of Cavite’s 7th District, Asia’s top players 20 years old and below are seeing action.

It will be a busy month for local chess as the country will also be hosting the Philippine International Chess Classic from Dec. 5 to 12 and the PSC-Puregold International Chess Challenge from Dec. 14 to 21.

Both events are scheduled at Celebrity Sports Plaza in Diliman, Quezon City. Roy Luarca
