Bakers, Giants eye share of early lead

After coasting to double-digit wins, Cafe France faces its real test today against Jumbo Plastic in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The Bakers and the Giants clash at 2 p.m. with the winner joining Hapee on top at 3-0.

“The acid test for my team comes when we play against elite teams,” said coach Egay Macaraya after the Bakers routed two league newcomers. “That will validate our ability as a contender.”

Cagayan Valley also tries to stay unbeaten in three games when it tackles Cebuana Lhuillier at 4 p.m., while Tanduay Light, with coach Lawrence Chongson returning from suspension, looks to pick up a second win over Bread Story at 12 noon.

The Bakers opened their campaign by cruising past MP Hotel, 86-59, and Racal Motors, 67-56, with Filipino-American guard Maverick Ahanmisi, Jonar Huertas and Mon Abundo leading the charge.

In contrast, the Giants won their first two games by just an average of 3.5 points, but Jumbo coach Steven Tiu sees it as a good start.

“It’s a good challenge for my players,” said Tiu. “It’s something that will make them play at a high level and will help us in the long run.”

Dexter Maiquez starred in both games, even drilling seven points in the final minute of the Giants’ 63-61 escape over Cebuana Lhuillier last week.

The Rising Suns also hope to sustain their winning run even minus top rookie pick Moala Tautuaa for the third straight game. The 6-foot-7 Filipino-Tongan, just wrapped up his stint with Malaysia in the ABL this week.
