Former Azkals skipper Chieffy Caligdong announced his retirement from international football Wednesday night, ending a stellar career that spanned more than a decade and saw him score 16 goals for the national team.
The two-time Mr. Football awardee played a key role in the Azkals’ rise to prominence, including his magical strike against Vietnam two years ago in the Suzuki Cup that assured the Azkals of a semifinal appearance.
But injuries hampered his return to the national side this year.
“I’m proud to have been part of the national team and as an example for the homegrown Filipino player,” said the 5-foot-4 Caligdong, 32, who will still play for his club, Green Archers United, in the United Football League.
Tributes poured following Caligdong’s announcement.
“Chieffy’s career should be celebrated,” said Azkals skipper Rob Gier. “He has inspired so many players, especially us his teammates.”
“It’s too early for him to retire,” said Younghusband. “It was an honor playing alongside Chieffy.”
“Chieffy symbolized a lot about the Azkals, the fighting spirit and the never-say-die attitude. We will miss his presence in the team,” said Azkals manager Dan Palami.
