Silver-bronze for Filipino cable wakeskaters

PHUKET, Thailand—Susan Madelene Larsson settled for a silver medal while Jose Cembrano came up with a bronze in the cable wakeskate event of the 4th Asian Beach Games here Monday.

The 24-year-old Larsson showed the way going into the finals only to be outshone by Thai Tantanasorn Chaiyabood in the podium round at Bangneow Dam.

Chaiyabood secured the gold with 85.00 points with Larsson ending up second with 82.00. Another Thai, Tulip Tadtiam, was a far third with 75.33.

Cembrano took the bronze after garnering 78 points in the men’s category. Thailand’s Techin Nakajima (86.67) and Burid Detwilaisri (86.00) finished 1-2.

The Filipinos moved up to 12th overall in the 45-nation field with two gold, one silver and three bronze medals.

In men’s beach volleyball, Edward Ybañez and Edmar Bonono marched to their second win after Abdelrahman Tafesh and Khaled Alarqan of Palestine defaulted their game on Karon Beach.

The Ybañez-Bonono tandem faces Ade Candra Rachmawan and Koko Prasetyo Darkuncoro of Indonesia Tuesday in its bid to reach the semifinals.

But Perlas Pilipinas stumbled out of the medal race in women’s 3×3 after a 19-13 loss to China.

The women’s handball team also took a second loss to Vietnam, 17-8, 24-3.

The strong Asian field likewise proved too much for triathletes Nikko Huelgas, John Chicano and Kim Mangrobang.

Huelgas, the country’s top triathlete, clocked 59 minutes 24 seconds and finished 15th out of 39 competitors while Chicano placed 27th (1:04:25) in the swim-bike-run men’s challenge ruled by Heo Minho (54:10) of South Korea.

Mangrobang ended up 10th (1:08:01) in the women’s race won by Ai Ueda (1:00:30) of Japan.

In wakeboarding, Andrea Tanjangco placed fifth among women while Paul Cantos and Angelo Louise Linao finished fifth and eighth among men.
