Generika, Air Force down foes, take 2nd

RC COLA-Air Force woke up from a first-set nap to down Mane ’N Tail even as Generika averted a monumental collapse to nip Cignal last night in the women’s division of the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix volleyball at Cuneta Astrodome.

The Raiders overcame a lethargic opening frame to blast the Lady Stallions, 19-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-19, while the Life Savers regained their mean forms to outlast the beleaguered HD Spikers, 25-19, 25-20, 20-25, 22-25, 15-9.

The winners moved into a tie for second at 5-3 behind idle leader Petron (6-1).

Mane ’N Tail top gun Kristy Jaeckel blasted back-to-back aces to secure the first set but the Raiders soon recovered and came back strong from the second.

Maika Ortiz, the RC Cola-Air Force’s leader, turned in 16 points including 13 spikes and three blocks.

It was the fourth straight victory for Generika while Cignal went down to its fourth successive defeat.

Natalia Korobkova delivered 26 points, all on kills, to lead Generika, which has learned to harness the strength of its local crew. Aby Marano unloaded 14 points, Cha Cruz scored 13, Stephanie Mercado 11, and Micmic Laborte 10 for the Life Savers.
