Nietes nears ring history

WORLD junior flyweight champion Donnie Nietes’ recent seventh-round technical knockout of Mexican Carlos Velarde in the Pinoy Pride 28 fight card at Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu sent out a clear message:  He has secured his place in boxing history.

The 32-year-old World Boxing Organization champion extended his reign to seven years, one month and 15 days, boosting him closer to surpassing the record of the great Gabriel “Flash” Elorde, who held his junior lightweight title for seven years and three months in the 1960s.
Retaining the title was not easy, though, for Nietes as the younger Velarde put up a good fight.  Nietes improved his record to 34 wins, 20 by knockouts, and one defeat.

Velarde slipped to 26-4 with 14 KOs.
