Palace lauds Pacquiao as ‘wellspring of inspiration’ in win over Algieri

MANILA, Philippines—Malacañang praised Filipino boxing champion and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao for dominating American boxer Chris Algieri in their fight in Macau Sunday.

“We join the Filipino nation in celebrating the triumph of Congressman Manny Pacquiao over Chris Algieri in Macau,” said Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said in a statement.

“Strength, grit, and courage were written all over his face and demeanor throughout the fight. With every punch that scored, millions of Filipinos cheered him to victory from all corners of the country and the world,” the statement said.

Coloma said Pacquiao “embodies and personifies the Filipinos’ outstanding qualities: audacious, tenacious and conscientious and persevering in advancing a worthy cause, and unwavering even in the face of danger and adversity.”

The secretary said the lawmaker was a role model to Filipinos seeking a brighter future.

“He is a worthy role model and wellspring of inspiration to all Filipinos who are striving to improve their well-being and attain a prosperous future,” Coloma said.

Pacquiao defended his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight belt against the previously undefeated Algieri in a bout that lasted 12 rounds.

The fighting congressman won via unanimous decision: 119-103, 119-103, 120-102.
