MANILA, Philippines — San Beda shut National University down in the second half to win, 75-62, and keep its title bid in the PCCL going Monday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
The Red Lions clamped down on the Bulldogs in the final two quarters — limiting the UAAP champions to just 20 points after going off for 40 in the first half. NU scored just six points and gave up 21 points in the third period.
NU took a 40-30 lead in the second quarter but San Beda, the five-time NCAA titlist, turned things around with a 25-6 run bridging the third and fourth period.
After a quiet first half, Nigerian center Ola Adeogun imposed his will and helped the Red Lions gain control of the game.
Adeogun notched a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds while going toe-to-toe with his counterpart and Cameroonian big man Alfred Aroga.
Art dela Cruz also stepped up for San Beda and his one-hander just below the free throw line clinched the game, 69-58, with 1:45 left.
Gelo Alolino scored eight unanswered points at one stretch in the second quarter that put NU up by 10, 40-30. He already had 10 points in the first half but he and so did his teammates cooled off in the second half.
The loss booted the Bulldogs out of championship contention.
San Beda went on a 9-2 spurt capped by an inside basket by Adeogun, who shot 9-of-13 from the field, to grab the lead, 43-42.
