Phinma Week 2: Iglupas forges QF duel with Cruz

KHIM Iglupas took out Japan’s Asumi Kanazawa, 6-0, 6-3, yesterday to arrange a quarterfinal duel with compatriot Monica Therese Cruz in the girls’ singles of the Phinma-PSC international junior tennis championship Week 2 at Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

The 16-year-old Iglupas, who ruled Week 1, is heavily favored to prevail over Cruz, who needed three sets to oust Hong Kong’s Alvina Lai, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Sixth seed Momoka Chimura stopped Filipina Frances Santiago, 7-5, 6-3, to join compatriot Ayumi Miyamoto who bested Thai Thassaporn Naklo, 6-3, 6-3.

Japan’s Aori Nagata and Satoko Suena also made the Final 8 by booting out Kazakhs Zhibek Kulambayeva, 7-6 (2), 6-1, and Milana Lysova, 6-2, 6-1, respectively.

In boys’ action, Toru Horie of Japan turned back Rio Noguchi, 6-1, 5-7, 7-5.  Other quarterfinalists are Thai Kittirat Kerdlarphee and Ammar Alhogbano of the US.
