MANILA, Philippines — The Manila Mavericks will be minus Maria Sharapova as they continue their quest for a first win in the inaugural leg of the International Premier Tennis League.
Sharapova, the world No. 2, won’t be with the Mavericks when they take on the Singapore Slammers in the final day of the IPTL on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena here.
“No, unfortunately,” said the Russian beauty when she was asked about possibly playing again with her team needing a win.
“I had only committed for two matches,” Sharapova added. “Originally, I was supposed to play one but I was asked to play a second one so I don’t think unfortunately, I’d be able to play a third one and I gotta get back home and start training for the new year.”
Sharapova rallied past French star Kristina Mladenovic of the UAE Royals on Friday but she and reigning Wimbledon champion Andy Murray lost in the mixed doubles in the same day.
On Saturday, singles players Sharapova and Murray lost in the mixed doubles anew this time, to Indian Aces’ pair of Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza. Sharapova also yielded to world No. 5 Ana Ivanovic later in the night.
Kirsten Flipkens will make her IPTL debut for the Mavericks instead.
The Slammers, also winless after two outings, expect to get a major lift with the arrival of world No. 1 Serena Williams.
Williams is set to compete in the mixed doubles and women’s singles.
