Skipper Nicole Tiamzon took charge as University of the Philippines shocked University of Santo Tomas in four sets, 26-24, 23-25, 25-20, 25-17, to score its first victory in three outings in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament yesterday at Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Earlier, Far Eastern University recovered from its first loss with a 25-14, 25-13, 25-19 triumph over University of the East for a third-best 2-1 card, just behind idle co-leaders Ateneo and La Salle (3-0).
Bernadette Pons powered the Lady Tamaraws with 11 points, while Toni Rose Basas and Jerilli Malabanan combined for 18 points.
Tiamzon shone with 19 points and also teamed up with Angeli Araneta (16 hits) and Kathy Bersola (14 hits) in the Lady Maroons’ upset win.
“We tried to show that we’re a different team now,” said UP coach Jerry Yee.
Meanwhile, two more sports kick off today as UE starts its bid for a third straight men and women’s titles in fencing at UP College of Human Kinetics gym.
The five-day athletics competition also gets going at Philsports with FEU vying to sweep the men and women’s championships anew.
