UE fencers post another golden double
University of the East completed another championship double in the UAAP Season 77 fencing tournament last Sunday at UP College of Hunak Kinetics Gym.
Bannered by season Most Valuable Player Nathaniel Perez, the Red Warriors won four golds, one silver and two bronze medals to claim their third consecutive men’s crown.
UE bested University of Santo Tomas (1-2-2) and University of the Philippines (1-1-3) for a league-best ninth title.
Article continues after this advertisementBehind tournament MVP Kea Gonzales, the Lady Warriors annexed their eight straight championship and a record ninth overall in the distaff side, winning five of six gold medals at stake on top of two silvers and a bronze to beat the Tigresses (1-4-3). Ateneo placed third with three bronze medals.
The Rookie of the Year honors went to Armstrong Tibay of UP in the men’s division and Nicole Cortey of UE in the women’s division.
The Warriors proved that they are not only the most successful fencing program in the seniors but also in high school.
