Tamaraws, Tigresses split UAAP athletics honors

Far Eastern University ruled men’s athletics of the UAAP for the fifth straight season but University of Santo Tomas spoiled another FEU sweep bid by topping the women’s division recently at Philsports athletics oval in Pasig.

MVP Janry Ubas set two meet marks to cap a four-gold medal romp that helped power the Tamaraws to a tournament-best 479 points.

Shot put gold medalist Bryan-Jay Pacheco copped top rookie honors for the Tamaraws, who captured their ninth title in 10 seasons.

The Tigresses ended the Lady Tamaraws’ 10-year reign, though, by tallying 478 points as Rookie of the Year Louielyn Pamatian capping UST’s run with gold in the 1,500 meters.

Ubas set a new record in the long jump (7.29 meters) and decathlon (6,521 points), while also winning the gold in the pole vault (4.30m) and triple jump (14.84m).

University of the East’s Jenyrose Rosales, who wiped out Lydia de Vega’s 32-year-old national record in the 400m run last season, bagged the women’s MVP this year after ruling the 400 (54.45 seconds), 400m hurdles (1:01.15) and the 200 (24.73).

FEU settled for second in the women’s division with 377 points. UE was third with 259.

La Salle settled for second in the men’s side with 228 points, with UST third with 226.

UE ruled juniors action with 390, followed by Ateneo (342) and De La Salle Zobel (175). Ateneo’s Javier Gayoso won the MVP plum.
