MANILA, Philippines – Away from the mats and into the Twitterverse, the UAAP Volleyball showdown between defending champions and the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons stirred some comments from beyond.
“Wow, UP women spikers 5th set vs Ateneo!” Senator Pia Cayetano posted.
Cayetano is part of the 1983 UP team that won the UAAP volleyball title.
INQUIRER sports columnist Sev Sarmenta, who is a professor at Ateneo, was also tubed in to the near upset.
“UP has to dig in deep against the championship of Ateneo in this 5th set,” Sarmenta posted.
Ateneo held on to win in five sets 3-2, 25-18, 22-25, 25-20, 15-25, 15-11.
Twitter personality Professional Heckler had some nice statistics for his more than 100,000 followers.
“Sets won this season against the great Alyssa Valdez and Ateneo: UP: 2 The rest of UAAP: 0,” he posted. “Great game UP Maroons, congrats ADMU!”
Chot Reyes, who knows something about winning, said the five-setter was important for Ateneo.
“Great fight put up by UP. It was important for Ateneo to be tested like that.”
And yes, Reyes is an Atenean.
