UP Maroons fire 6 past Warriors, keep football lead

Ten-man University of the Philippines overwhelmed University of the East, 6-0, late Saturday at Ateneo’s Moro Lorenzo Football Field in Loyola Heights to stay on top of the table in the UAAP men’s football tournament.

Albert Yatco was sent off in the 69th minute for a second yellow card but it hardly mattered for the Fighting Maroons who climbed to 13 points, two clear of second-running Ateneo.

Fierce rivals Ateneo and La Salle battled to a scoreless standoff yesterday.

Carlos Monfort netted a brace with an 18th-minute and injury-time goals in the first half, while Julian Clariño (6th), Joseph Fermin (19th), Jinggoy Valmayor (59th) and Michael Simms (89th) also found the back of the net for UP.

Defending champion Far Eastern University whipped Adamson, 9-1, at the FEU Diliman pitch to climb to 10 points for third place.
