Lady Eagles, Eaglets still unbeaten
ATENEO dominated two UAAP events yesterday with the Lady Eagles staying unbeaten in 10 games in women’s volleyball and the Blue Eaglets completing a 14-0 elimination sweep of juniors basketball.
The Lady Eagles turned back University of the Philippines in straight sets, 25-18, 25-18, 25-18, to secure at least a twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four.
Alyssa Valdez, the leading MVP contender, again presided over the Lady Eagles’ attack by firing 16 spikes and three service aces in a 20-point performance against the Lady Maroons at Filoil Flying V Arena.
Rookie Bea de Leon also stepped up with 10 points for the Lady Eagles, the defending champions who moved within four wins of an elimination sweep and an outright Finals stint.
La Salle stayed a close second at 9-1 after tripping tough National University, 25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 27-25, as Mika Reyes and Ara Galang combined for 29 points.
The Blue Eaglets, meanwhile, accomplished their sweep bid in the eliminations with a 76-49 drubbing of the defending champion National University Bullpups at Blue Eagle Gym.
Mike Nieto piled up a huge double-double of 29 points and 10 rebounds to power the Blue Eaglets to a 14-0 sweep that will send them straight to the Finals with a tremendous thrice-to-beat advantage.
NU, Adamson and La Salle Zobel ended up in a three-way tie for second at 9-5 and will go through tiebreakers before battling in the stepladder semifinals.
The Bullpups and the Baby Falcons will dispute the No. 2 spot, which comes with a twice-to-beat advantage, due to a superior quotient over the Junior Archers.
The Baby Falcons capped its elimination run with a 76-67 triumph over UST.
