Sustaining its impressive surge, University of Santo Tomas drubbed Far Eastern University, 25-19, 25-21, 25-23, yesterday and climbed to solo third in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at Filoil Flying V Arena.
Rookie standout EJ Laure, back in fine form after a season-low production, fired all but one of her team-high 17 points on kills to lead the streaking Tigresses.
“I’m just happy that I was able to recover right away,” said Laure, who rebounded from a personal low of six points in their 25-22, 25-19, 25-18 win over National University last Wednesday.
The Tigresses, who once stood near-bottom at 1-5, racked up four straight victories to improve to 5-5 behind powerhouse leaders Ateneo (10-0) and La Salle (9-1).
Adamson blasted winless University of the East, 25-15, 25-22, 25-18, for a 4-6 slate.
Amanda Villanueva fired all her 13 points off attacks to lift the Lady Falcons, while Mylene Paat and Jema Galanza chipped in 11 each.
Pam Lastimosa, who scored 12 points, and Carmela Tunay also stepped up for UST in the final set where the Tigresses scored the match’s last four points after trailing at 21-23. Tunay shattered the last tie at 23 with a tip-in.
“We’ve sorted out the team’s problem about lack of commitment,” said UST coach Odjie Mamon.
