MANILA, Philippines — Meralco stayed unbeaten after beating Talk ‘N Text, 91-83, in the 2015 PBA Commissioner’s Cup Wednesday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Import Josh Davis didn’t have a big night offensively but his presence made the difference for the Bolts who gained early lead in the standings with a 3-0 record while also dealing the Tropang Texters their first loss in three games.

The 3-0 mark is Meralco’s best start in franchise history since joining the league in 2010. Veteran guard Gary David provided the scoring for the Bolts with 17 points.

Meralco head coach Norman Black said he wasn’t aware that the Bolts have never gone 3-0 to start the conference but he did notice how his players defended against a strong team like the Texters.

“We did a good job of guarding the perimeter. I want to give credit to my players for their defensive execution,” said Black. “It’s a good start for us considering that this is a short conference. It feels good to be 3-0.”

Davis scored only eight points on 1-of-10 shooting from the field but he had 17 rebounds, three steals and two blocks. He had three crucial rebounds, made two free throws and a steal in the final one minute and 55 seconds.

The game also marked the return of Mike Cortez and Jared Dillinger for Meralco. Cortez was out in the win over Kia due to a knee contusion, while Dillinger played in his first game this conference after likewise recovering from a knee injury.

Richard Howell had 24 points while Jayson Castro led all locals in scoring with 18 for the Texters, who never led.

A 3-pointer by Willie Miller pulled TNT to within one, 82-81, before Meralco scored seven unanswered points capped by Davis’ two free throws. Davis went 6-of-8 at the line with his awkward yet effective shooting form where he lifts the ball from the right side of his waist.

Meralco drew 41 points from its bench led by David, who went 5-of-9 from the field in 23 minutes.
