British Council backs 14 PH Olympic bets

MANILA—Fourteen national athletes received a much-needed boost in their drive to the London Olympics.

The Philippine Sports Commission Wednesday announced that the British Embassy and the British Council will shoulder the training of the 14 Filipinos for next year’s Games.

The PSC Facebook page said the endeavor is part of its collaboration with its British counterparts. It didn’t state the amount of money to be spent.

The beneficiaries are Jhessie King Lacuna and Jasmine Al-Khaldi in swimming, Marlon Avenido and John Paul Lizardo in taekwondo, Hagen Alexander Topacio and Paul Brian Rosario in shooting, Marestella Torres and Henry Dagmil in track and field, Mark Javier in archery, Roque Abala in rowing, Margarito Angana Jr. in wrestling, Nesthy Petecio and Victor Saludar III in boxing and Emerson Sugui in fencing.

Most of them are currently training for the Jakarta Southeast Asian Games in November. The Philippines has yet to qualify athletes in key sports like boxing and taekwondo.
