Unson helps Canlubang pad lead

CEBU CITY—Canlubang found an unlikely hero in Rene Unson yesterday to boost its lead to three points over defending champion Luisita and set the stage for another thrilling climax of the Philippine Airlines (PAL) Interclub Seniors golf team championship here.

With Dave Hernandez somewhat  holding his own against Luisita star Eddie Bagtas, Unson scored 48 points to power Canlubang’s 135 output for the day and a 404 total going into the final  day of action at Mactan Island Golf Club.

Hernandez managed 47 against the day-best  52 of Bagtas while Luigi Yulo rounded out scoring with 40 for Canlubang, which will seek an  eighth overall title in the last 10 years of the 55 years  and above event.

Comebacking former five-time individual champion Tommy Manotoc, who sparked Canlubang’s surge to the top in the second round with 53 points, will try to close it for the Sugar Barons.

Luisita remained a threat at 401 by amassing 134 for the day.
