MANILA, Philippines—Believe the hype: The Super Fight will eclipse the Super Bowl as far as average ticket price is concerned.
The most expensive ticket for the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao showdown on May 2 is currently listed at a staggering $64,689 (P2.8 million) for Ringside Section row E.
The average ticket price of $10,506.41 (P465,000) for Mayweather-Pacquiao as against $10,466.11 (P463,000) for the recent Super Bowl, is indeed phenomenal considering that tickets have yet to go on sale.
The prices, Fighthype.com reported Monday, are based on data collected by leading resale market aggregator TiqIQ on what speculators (those with no tickets in possession) are currently asking for the welterweight title fight.
Just to get in at the 16,800-seat MGM Grand in Las Vegas, will cost $4,175 (P210,000) for Section 201 row P.
The ringside tickets’ face value is $5,000 while the general admission tickets cost $1,000.
According to nydailynews.com, ticket demands are so stiff that Top Rank honcho Bob Arum told a Las Vegas ESPN radio station on Monday that only high rollers with a line of credit of $250,000 (P11 million) with MGM Grand will merit consideration for complimentary ringside tickets.
Even Hollywood celebrities, who usually are accommodated for free, have to dip into their pockets this time, Arum told Daily News.
“I would say that Joe Frazier is turning over in his grave. And Muhammad Ali is looking on in disbelief.”
Arum added that MGM Grand will be reconfigured to allow the gate to exceed $40 million, or almost double the previous record of $20 million for Mayweather-Alvarez.
Overall, primarily with pay-per-view to be pegged at a low of $89.95 to a high of $99.95 and projected total buys of between 3.5 to 4 million, the Super Fight could gross around $400 million. Roy Luarca
