MANILA, Philippines—The PBA Board of Governors will convene Thursday to lay down the criteria in selecting the next commissioner of the league.
PBA chair Patrick Gregorio said the board is under pressure to immediately find a replacement following the announcement of commissioner Chito Salud to step down at the end of the current season.
“We have to finalize the criteria. It will guide us in appointing the new commissioner,” said Gregorio of Talk ‘N Text.
Except for vice chair Robert Non of San Miguel Corp., the rest of the governors of the 12 ballclubs are expected to provide inputs in the discussion to be held at the PBA office in Libis, Quezon City where possible candidates could also be mentioned. Non is recovering from a successful heart surgery.
“I’m sure some governors will bring up some of the names. I just don’t know up to what point the board will evaluate these candidates,” said Gregorio.
What is certain, Gregorio stressed, is that Salud’s successor will be announced before the Commissioner’s Cup ends.
“It will be good for the new commissioner to be named early while commissioner Salud is still here,” said Gregorio, adding this will give the new commissioner time to learn the ropes.
Among the names being floated as Salud’s replacement are PBA legends Ramon Fernandez, former senator Robert Jaworski and Chito Loyzaga, who became commissioner of the Philippine Sports Commission and the UAAP.
Siblings Ogie and Chito Narvasa are also being considered.
