MANILA, Philippines—Donnie Nietes aims to extend his reign while Nonito Donaire Jr. seeks redemption in the co-headliner of Pinoy Pride 30 on March 28 at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The longest reigning Filipino world champion at over seven years, Nietes will be staking his WBO junior flyweight title against Mexican Gilberto Parra.
A leaner, meaner Donaire, on the other hand, tangles with Brazilian William Prado in his comeback bout since losing by knockout to Jamaican Nicholas Walters in their battle for the WBA featherweight title last October in California.
According to the 32-year-old Donaire (33-3, 21 knockouts), his future in the ring hinges on the outcome of his 12-round super bantamweight tussle with Prado (22-4-1, 15 KOs).
An impressive win, particularly via an early knockout, will put him back among the elite fighters, while an upset loss could probably mean the end of an illustrious career that saw him capture titles in five divisions.
“After this fight, I’ll realize if I am done or if I have more left in the tank,” Donaire said during yesterday’s press conference hosted by ALA Promotions and ABS-CBN Sports.
Unlike Donaire, who bared that he’ll go all-out for a knockout, Nietes (34-1, 20 KOs) said he’s focused on winning, but won’t hesitate to pounce on his opponent if the opportunity arises.
Parra has knocked out 17 of 19 victims against only two losses.
Unbeaten “Prince” Albert Pagara (22-0, 15 KOs), touted as the next Filipino ring superstar, clashes with Mexican Rodolfo Hernandez (26-5-1, 24 KOs) in the supporting bout that stakes the IBF intercontinental junior feather crown. Roy Luarca
