Dickies Cup: CEU Lady Stallions rule elims

MANILA, Philippines—Janine Pontejos erupted for 33 points as defending champion Centro Escolar University-CaféFrance downed Far Eastern University-Multimotors, 74-64, and topped the first round elims of the Smart-PCABL 4th Dickies Cup last Sunday at Philippine Buddhacare gym in Quezon City.

After taking a 20-13 first quarter lead, the Lady Stallions encountered little trouble in posting their fourth win in five outings as Mary Ann Dologue and Cristine Caranto joined the scoring spree that underscored CEU’s status as one of the best teams in the country Thursday.

Pontejos highlighted her game-long brilliance with five triples aside from posting 8 rebounds and 7 assists in 32 minutes of action. She was named Dickies Player of the Game for the second time.

Caranto and Dologue finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively, as CEU handed FEU its third defeat in five games in the tournament sponsored by CW Home Depot, Powerhouse, K-Tech Sports, Inc., Dickies Underwear and Jumbo Plastic Linoleum.

Meantime, University of Santo Tomas notched its second straight win by besting Adamson, 76-71, to forge a four-way tie for third place with University of the East,  FEU, and its victim.

Ateneo-San Miguel got another stellar performance from Jolina Go to beat UE, 62-57, and jump to solo second with a 3-2 card in the six-team event.
