PH Davis Cuppers sweep Sri Lanka

MANILA, Philippines—A shutout this time.

Treat Huey and Francis Casey Alcantara completed the Cebuana Lhuillier-Philippines’ domination of Sri Lanka with victories in the dead rubbers Sunday for a 5-0 sweep of their Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group 2 tie at Valle Verde Country Club in Pasig.

Huey, honing up for the clay-court season abroad, downed Sharmal Dissanayake, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, in the first of the reverse singles before Pepperdine University stalwart Alcantara routed Dineshkantan Thangarajah, 6-2, 6-3.

The Filipinos, who also beat the Sri Lankans, 4-1, in Colombo last year, face Chinese Taipei next.

“The team showed a lot of heart over the weekend and this should condition us going into the next tie against Chinese Taipei,” said PH manager Jean Henri Lhuillier.

Although the Philippines has the edge, 4-2, in head-to-head matches, the Taiwanese have prevailed in the last two ties, including a 3-2 win at Plantation Bay Resort in Lapu Lapu City in 2011.

“For sure it’s going to be tough (against Chinese Taipei) but we are definitely going out to fight,” said Huey, who teamed up with Alcantara to seal the tie with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 win over Sharmal Dissanayake and Dineshkantan Than-garajah in Saturday’s doubles.

Last Friday, Patrick John Tierro fought back to upend Harshana Godamanna, 5-7, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0, 6-3, before Ruben Gonzales made it 2-0 for the hosts with an easy 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Dissanayake.
