MANOLA, Philippines—Buoyed by victories in table tennis and beach volleyball, College of St. Benilde clinched the overall NCAA championship in the seniors division for the second straight season while San Beda notched a fifth general championship in the high school section in Season 90 that closes with the cheerleading competition Tuesday at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.
With runner-up finishes on other fronts, the Blazers piled up enough points to hold off San Beda, Arellano U and Emilio Aguinaldo College for the overall title.
St. Benilde amassed 660 points with San Beda a far second with 568.5.
San Beda scored victories in men’s football, basketball and swimming, while Arellano, on its first year as regular NCAA member, and Emilio Aguinaldo College finished third and fourth, respectively.
“This is a tribute to the hard work of our teams,” said St. Benilde’s management committee representative Dax Castellano.
The Lions collected 568.5 points with the bulk of coming from victories in basketball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s taekwondo, women’s table tennis, football and soft tennis.
Roles were reversed in the juniors division with San Beda notching 400 points to beat St. Benilde with 322.5. Letran was third followed by EAC and San Sebastian.
The Cubs reigned supreme in basketball, table tennis and lawn tennis, ended up second in swimming, badminton and football and third in chess and taekwondo.
