MANILA, Philippines — Former light middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez wants another shot at pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Alvarez lost to Mayweather but only by majority decision two years ago in a fight where he said he learned a lot from.\
“Hopefully we can get the Mayweather rematch down the line,” Alvarez told ESPN Deportes.
“The weight affected me the first time. I did learn a lot in that fight. We got experience from that fight. I always try to look at the positives in things. But I know I’m not going to fight in a weight class that’s not mine anymore,” Alvarez added.
The fight against Mayweather was fought at a catchweight of 152 pounds and not at the 154, and that two pounds made all the difference Alvarez, a legitimate junior middleweight who had a harder time making weight.
But before a rematch with Mayweather, the two fighters will have to win in their coming bouts first with Mayweather facing his greatest challenge yet in Manny Pacquiao in May 2 in Las Vegas and Alvarez taking on James Kirkland in Houston, Texas.
“The fight would have been bigger and better maybe if it happened a few years ago,” Alvarez said of the coming Mayweather-Pacquiao showdown. “But the fight is happening and it’s still important to the credibility of boxing.”
