LVP open to Filipinos from abroad

Larong Volleyball ng Pilipinas is opening its door to foreign players with Filipino roots.

LVP president Joey Romasanta yesterday said two players from abroad will be picked for the national teams to the Asian women’s under-23 and Southeast Asian Games in June.

“It’s a good to have one to two players who will upgrade our national team,” said Romasanta. “They can give to the team things they’ve learned playing abroad. We should have the right mix and then learn from them.”

Hot prospects are Philippine Superliga draftees Iris Tolenada and Alexa Micek, who are both 23 years old and are eligible for the biennial games slated in Singapore.

Tolenada, who was made the overall top pick by Philips Gold, played as setter for San Francisco State University and won MVP and Best Female Athlete in 2012 by the California Collegiate Athletics Association.

Micek, who played as libero for North Carolina State, is now a regular spiker for Petron.
