Freddie Roach happy Floyd Mayweather Sr. in his son’s corner

MANILA, Philippines — Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be getting instructions from his father/trainer Floyd Sr. when he faces Manny Pacquiao on May 2 (May 3 Manila time).

And that’s exactly how Pacquiao’s longtime trainer Freddie Roach wants it to be.

“The dad gets so nervous in between rounds, he has trouble getting the words out, he kind of stutters halfway through it and he doesn’t really get the information across the fighter,” the Hall of Fame trainer told the Jim Rome Show.

Usually, Floyd Jr. prefers his uncle Roger Mayweather as his head trainer. But health issues prevented Roger from overseeing the training camp on a full-time basis, according to report on boxingscene.com.

“I mean, I’m really happy he’s in the corner because the kid’s going to be fighting by himself,” Roach said.

“I’m sure he’s done this his whole life because he grew up in the gym. I’ve known him since he was five years old,” said Roach, referring to Floyd Jr. “He was a good fighter at five, but the thing is, he’s always taught himself and he’s never really been taught the correct way to do things and I don’t think his father can deliver that.”
