UAAP softball: Tigresses rip UP batters, forge KO tiff

MANILA, Philippines — University of Santo Tomas stayed in contention for the last title slot after ripping University of the Philippines, 7-2, Friday in the stepladder semifinals of the UAAP softball tournament at Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

The Tigresses raced to a 7-0 advantage after six innings on the way to stunning the No. 2 Lady Maroons to forge a winner-take-all match for the last championship berth.

Kris Lacupa had three hits and an RBI while scoring twice and Christine Palma had two RBIs and as many hits to power the Tigresses.

The winner of the do-or-die match at 9 a.m. tomorrow will advance against four-time champion Adamson in the Finals.

Unbeaten in 60 games since 2011, the Lady  Falcons earned an outright title berth and a thrice-to-beat advantage after completing a 12-0 sweep of the eliminations.

Lacupa, Palma, Cristy Joy Roa and Mary Garde scored a run each as the third-ranked Tigresses broke away right in the first inning.

The Lady Maroons clinched the No. 2 spot and a twice-to-beat advantage in the stepladder semifinals after edging the Tigresses, 7-4, in a playoff match.
