Navy seeks Shakey’s V-L top spot vs Meralco
Philippine Navy seeks the solo lead against Meralco Tuesday even as defending champion Army gets its campaign going in the Shakey’s V-League Season 12 Open Conference at Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Fresh off a straight-sets conquest of Coast Guard, the Lady Sailors return to action against the Power Spikers in the 2 p.m. clash.
Army, keeping the core of the squad that ruled this tournament last year, squares off with Fourbees at 4 p.m.
With favorites PLDT Home Ultera and Cagayan Valley posting convincing victories last Sunday, pressure is now on the Lady Troopers to show fine form.
Fourbees, represented by players from Perpetual Help, could cause problems with its young and athletic roster, although Army has a huge edge in experience with the likes of MJ Balse and Jovelyn Gonzaga in the squad.
Dindin Santiago-Manabat, Rachel Anne Daquis, Nene Bautista and setter Tina Salak are also raring to show their worth for Army which beat Cagayan Valley for last year’s title.
Cagayan Valley whipped the Lady Altas, 25-13, 25-12, 25-10, last Sunday.
Navy survived a shaky first set before putting up a relentless stand to repulse Coast Guard, 26-24, 25-14, 25-18, in its first game.
The Lady Sailors relied on Hezzymie Acuña, who fired four service aces to finish with 12 hits and Pau Genido who added 10 points.
Navy coach Edgardo Rusit said the team is targeting a semifinal finish in the tournament.
