Nothing can be more gratifying for Aby Maraño than a stint with the Philippine team.

The crafty middle-hitter had won team championships and personal milestones in college and commercial leagues but has yet to make a mark with the national squad.

“This is the dream of every athlete, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said the 22-year-old former La Salle stalwart after she was tapped to lead the country’s women’s team in the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore.

The Philippines, through the Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas headed by Joey Romasanta, will also play in two other international tournaments—the 1st Asian U23 Women’s Championship here and the 18th Asian Seniors Women’s Championship in Beijing next month.

Also named to the national squad in the U23 meet are reigning UAAP MVP Alyssa Valdez, Gretchel Soltones, Jia Morado, Bea de Leon, EJ Laure, Ria Meneses, Myla Pablo, Dindin Manabat, Jaja Santiago, Kim Fajardo, Tin Agno, Nicole Tiamzon and Christine Rosario.
