HOLLYWOOD—The end of “Pretty Boy” Floyd?
Trainer Freddie Roach said Friday he doesn’t believe undefeated American Floyd Mayweather Jr. will stick with the Pretty Boy moniker once he steps into the ring with Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao on May 2in Las Vegas.
“I don’t think so,” Roach told journalists inside the Wild Card gym when asked if Mayweather would keep the nickname after the battle between the two pound-for-pound greats at MGM Grand.
Not that Roach felt he deserved the moniker anyway.
“I didn’t think he was pretty in the first place,” Roach said.
Pacquiao has made it a habit of “rearranging” the faces of his opponents in some of his fights, like he were some sculptor specializing in the grotesquely macabre. He did it with bigger foes like Miguel Cotto, Oscar De La Hoya and Antonio Margarito and Roach feels Pacquiao can do the same to Mayweather.
“He’s got a strong left hand and I feel that if we can get him, Manny might knock him out,” Roach said.
Roach had previously said he wasn’t going to predict a knockout and that the corner was prepared to win this fight on the scorecards.
