Alcala, Albo snare 2 Luzon-Sun Cellular juniors badminton titles apiece
Mark Shelley Alcala and Jewel Angelo Albo won a pair of titles each and emerged as among the most bemedalled participants in the Luzon qualifiers of the Sun Cellular National Juniors Badminton tournament at Baliwag Gymnasium in Bulacan over the weekend.
Alcala downed Louis Joaquin Pangilinan, 21-17, 21-15, to cop the under-17 title and then trounced Emilio Mangubat, Jr., 21-12, 21-14, in the under-19 finals of the tournament bankrolled by Sun Cellular, Smart Communications and the MVP Sports Foundation.
Albo beat Jason Octavio Vanzuela, 21-18, 22-20, in the boys’ under-15 class and then routed Francis Haroun Sarmiento, 21-5, 21-6, in the under-13 final.
Article continues after this advertisementSamantha Louis Ramos outlasted Mariya Anghela Sevilla, 14-21, 21-19, 22-20, to rule the girls’ under-19 while Aldreen Rae Concepcion rallied past Janelle Anne Andres, 19-21, 21-17, 21-18, to top the girls’ under-17 play.
Mikaela Joy de Guzman downed Susmita Angelique Ramos, 21-19, 20-22, 21-16, for the girls’ under-15 title while Althea Marie Gonzales bested Nicollete Santiago, 21-15, 21-6, to top the girls’ under-13 bracket.
