From a name change to a “better team,” the Philippine Mavericks are prime and ready for the 2015 reiteration of the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL).

Leading the Mavericks, formerly known as Manila Mavericks, is world No. 1 Serena Williams as she replaces Maria Sharapova as the top women’s player for the Philippines.

Mavericks co-owner Jean-Henri Lhuillier said the Mavericks had a deeper women’s roster compared to the previous year.

“Adding Serena adds depth in both singles and doubles,” Lhuillier said during the press conference on Thursday at Mall of Asia Arena.

With Japan joining the IPTL, more players are drafted for each team.

Joining Serena in the women’s roster are Jarmila Gajdosova and Sabine Lisicki.

With his revamped roster, Lhuillier is aiming for that golden racket that IPTL champions take home.

“From a third place finish, we hope to win the championship,” Lhuillier said.

Frenchman Jo Wilfried Tsonga is one of two holdovers from the 2014 cast, but another Frenchman, Richard Gasquet, will join him in the lineup.

“Gasquet is solid, he’ll make Jo comfortable this time,” Lhuillier said.

Filipino-American Treat Huey returns to the team with newcomers Mark Philippoussis, the new team captain, and Borna Coric.
